Overview 

Designed to give an overview of the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, and the risk and benefits, safe prescribing, and reduction strategies of antipsychotics and benzodiazepines as a management option.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

1. identify behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia;
2. evaluate risks and benefits of medicines used in the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia;
3. describe 6 steps for safe prescribing of antipsychotics and benzodiazepines to manage the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia;
4. outline tapering strategies for reducing antipsychotics and benzodiazepines.
