Medicines Administration Course

The list of medicines that pharmacists can administer is expanding! Our Medicines Administration Course will give you the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support your patients in correctly administering their medications.

Overview

The Medicines Administration Course is a CPD-accredited short course designed to upskill and train pharmacists in medicines administration techniques to support patients in the medication management process.

The role of the pharmacist has grown significantly over recent years and upon completion of the course, pharmacists will be able to support patients to correctly administer and optimise the administration of their medicines, by providing clear explanations and demonstrations.

Pharmacists will learn about the different routes of medicine administration including:

  • Oral
  • Sublingual
  • Buccal
  • Nasal
  • Ocular
  • Otic
  • Rectal
  • Vaginal
  • Topical
  • Transdermal
  • Inhalation
  • Subcutaneous
  • Intramuscular

Pharmacists will also learn specific medicines administration techniques and the advantages and disadvantages of different routes of administration.

Additional 15-minute non-accredited and non-compulsory modules will be made available over time and will cover product-specific information to familiarise pharmacists and support pharmacist-led or patient-led administration of specific products. Pharmacists enrolled in the Medicines Administration Course will be made aware of the availability of these additional modules via email.

Legislation and jurisdiction

This course includes training on administering medicines by injection. In some jurisdictions, this training is required, along with being an approved pharmacist immuniser, to administer specific injectable medicines e.g. Long-acting injectable buprenorphine.

Completing this course does not provide pharmacists with the authority to administer medication via all the routes of administration covered in this course. Please refer to state and territory-specific legislation to determine which specific medicines pharmacists can administer and if there are any additional requirements.

Learning objectives

After completing this activity pharmacists should be able to:

  • Outline the medicine administration process and the role of the pharmacist
  • Recognise the appropriate technique for administration of medicines via various routes of administration (oral, sublingual, buccal, rectal, vaginal, intranasal, intraocular, otic, inhaled, topical, transdermal, intramuscular and subcutaneous routes of medicine administration)
  • Highlight the pharmacokinetics, special considerations, precautions and contraindications to administration of medicines via the different routes of administration
  • Recognise the legislation related to the administration of medicines by pharmacists, including the role of pharmacists as immunisers
