Designed to give an overview of the availability of medical termination of pregnancy (MTOP) in Australia, and the training required for pharmacists to become a registered dispenser of the drugs used to perform MTOP.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  1. recognise the medicines used in medical termination of pregnancy, and the approved protocol for administration of those medicines;
  2. identify the common effects, adverse effects and complications that can occur following administration of medical termination of pregnancy, and recognise when patients experiencing such effects should seek additional medical assistance;
  3. recall the PBS subsidy conditions that apply to medical termination of pregnancy;
  4. recognise the training available to pharmacists wishing to access and dispense medicines for medical termination of pregnancy.
