Overview 

This article will examine some options for assessment and safe pain management in the elderly.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  1. discuss the prevalence of pain;
  2. discuss assessment of pain in the older person;
  3. describe therapy options and practical tips to help minimise risk;
  4. identify multimodal pain management strategies, including non-drug approaches;
  5. discuss common and significant side effects associated with analgesics;
  6. consider the appropriateness of opioid therapy in the management of persistent pain
