Overview 

Designed to give an overview of the role of calcium and vitamin D, along with prevention methods and avoidable risk factors to reduce the lifelong risk of osteoporosis, falls and fractures.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  1. Advise on prevention methods and avoidable risk factors to reduce the lifelong risk of osteoporosis, falls, and fractures
  2. Explain bone remodeling and the homeostatic balance of calcium
  3. Discuss the benefits, risks, and adverse effects of calcium and vitamin D supplementation
  4. Describe the pharmacokinetics (absorption and metabolism) of calcium and vitamin D
  5. Discuss the dietary and dosage recommendations of calcium and vitamin D in different patient groups
