Overview 

This article takes a closer look at the medicines, chemicals and poisons that are classified in Schedules 5, 6 and 7. It discusses some aspects that pharmacists should consider if they are called upon to supply poisons, dangerous poisons or chemicals of security concern

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  1. distinguish between the restrictions of medicines and chemicals placed in Schedules 5, 6 and 7;
  2. identify common pharmacy items that are placed in Schedules 5, 6 and 7;
  3. recognise chemicals of security concern;
  4. recall safe handling, packaging and labelling requirements when called upon to decant or repackage a hazardous chemical or poison.
